  • Here’s the thing about being the first… Being the first means that you embark on a journey that is unpaved. A road that is filled with uncertainty, obstacles, and adversity. They say struggle is meant to shape you for your purpose and that adversity is necessary to build character. As novel as this road has been, and as tough as it is paving this road on my own. Being the first has been a blessing. Breaking toxic traditions is necessary. And, it has shaped me, molded my views, and ultimately prepared me for what’s to come. I look back in the rear-view mirror and smile. I am so proud of this road, this journey that has made me who I am.   • Med Student Reflections: Psychiatry ✨ Consultation Liaison/Emergency Department 🚨 TRIGGER WARNING: Suicide-Related What is consultation liaison? It’s a branch of psychiatry that specializes in the area between general medicine and psychiatry. An example would be a patient who has a history of eating disorder comes in for cyclic vomiting syndrome possibly related to cannabis use and the psychiatry team is consulted for suicidal ideation. The psych team evaluates the patient to see if they require any psychiatric treatment related to their medical/psych illness. Another example would be consulted for assessing whether a patient had capacity to make decisions about their medical care. There’s standardized ways to assess capacity but I can save that for a diff. post. What is the primary purpose of psychiatry ED? To assess whether a person is a danger to themselves, to others, or overall gravely disabled person due to a psychiatry illness. Does the person qualify for an involuntary hold in the psychiatric unit. Some examples of situations that may require psychiatric interventions: attempted suicide, substance abuse, depression, psychosis, violence or acute changes in behavior. This was my first time ever doing psychiatry CL/ED. It was such a big learning curve compared to any other psychiatry specialty I’ve been exposed to. Your assessment and plan is so critical on CL/ED. For many people, this may be the first time they have ever encountered or spoken to a psychiatrist so this first encounter with a patient can really mold their experience with mental health providers moving forward in the management of their well-being! CL/ED is so important, but also interesting. For some, they could be having their first manic episode, first psychotic break, first anything - which is extremely scary for the patient but also a learning experience on how to speak to and treat people who come in the hospital with this. Really enjoyed my experience in psych CL/ED! Gotta work more on my assessment and plans. So much room for improvement but that’s what residency training is for I suppose.   • Finally participated in an in-person Kaiser research symposium this weekend☺️ Presenting posters online isn’t the same! As we’re slowly coming out of the pandemic, I love being able to see colleagues and meet new faces in the flesh. We’ve been working on this research project since I was a second-year medical student and currently revising manuscript before submission for publication. I never participated in research as an undergrad. Do you need research experience to get into med school? Absolutely not! Research is meant to provide insight into what it takes to discover new knowledge and develop new treatments for diseases. We learn and practice evidence-based medicine as future physicians. I never anticipated to get really involved in research as a medical student. I somehow became the research person bc I saw a deficit in resources and wanted to share opportunities for others as well. As a first-generation medical student, I think it’s important to share opportunities with your peers. It’s doesn’t hurt to help each other out🫱🏽‍🫲🏿 Have questions about research?   • 🌟5 ways to cope with REJECTION🌟 1️⃣Allow yourself to feel whatever emotion you are experiencing. It’s okay to break down and cry. Rejections suck. Express yourself in the way you know how. There is no right or wrong way to feel human emotion. It’s okay not yo be okay. 2️⃣ AVOID anything that will make you feel worse about receiving a rejection. Don’t go to your friends asking them about how many interviews they got or how they’re doing in their journey. The worst thing you can do is compare yourself to anyone else. Comparison is the thief of joy. 3️⃣DO something that will make you feel better. if that’s going out for a walk or calling your hype person or going out to eat by yourself or with love ones. Anything that will help console or provide comfort. Do it! 4️⃣Consider doing something that is within your control! it may be helpful to write emails to the medical student coordinator, send letters of interest, or reaching out to a mentor who can give some advice on what steps to take to maximize your opportunities/chances. 5️⃣ REMEMBER HOW FAR YOU’VE COME. You didn’t get this far because it was easy. You have gotten this far because of your hard work, tenacity, and perseverance. Old version of you would be so proud! show current you some grace.
