  • Life lately.

Wrapping up my ambulatory clinical rotation in Family Medicine. And realizing it’s been 8/9 months since I’ve worked on a medicine unit. My mind has been filled with psychiatry for the past 6 months. It’s crazy how quickly the general medical knowledge leaves your brain. You use it or lose it…

anyone else relate?

It’s also the tail end of interview season and still have a few more interviews to go + wedding planning.

Match Day cannot come any sooner!

  • Residency Application Timeline - 2023

💠August - Begin working on supplemental application due mid-September.
Not all specialties have a supplemental, but psychiatry did this year. Applicants can list regional preferences, top 5 experiences, urban vs. rural preferences, and signals.

Signals were a new feature this year where an applicant can signal up to 5 programs that they are interested in. Whether or not programs actually took these into account is program-dependent.

💠September - Wrap up all components (position descriptions, publications, letter of recommendations) of your main electronic residency application system (ERAS) due end of September!

💠October - Interview invitations can begin rolling in as early as the day of ERAS submission. Some programs have a secondary application that should be turned in ASAP. I would also begin sending out letters of interest as well. They can definitely make a difference.

💠November to February - continue sending out letters of interest and attending interviews.

💠February - start making your rank list. This year it’s due March 1, 2023.

💠March - The BIG DAY! On a Monday, applicant’s find out whether or not they have matched into a program and on Friday, we find out exactly which program we matched to.

  • Circa 2018 when I found out I got accepted into med school!🤭

Crazy to think that MATCH Day is only a few months away!

I remember applying to med school just wishing & praying to get accepted somewhere, anywhere. Here we are 4 years later🙏🏽

To any pre-meds applying this cycle, good luck on your interviews and start emailing programs letters of interest if you haven’t heard back!

You got this🙌🏽

  • How to set up your 4th year schedule 🏥

I would begin making a list of residency programs you’re interested in doing rotations at along with the medical student or program coordinator’s contact info.

Some programs will ask you to apply through the “visiting student learning opportunities” portal or their own individual application.

It’s good to reach out earlier than later! Get on the waitlist/interested students list now. And if they tell you it’s too early and reach out later, add it on your calendar of “things to do”.

Save for future reference🌟

  • I used to think perfect grades are a must to get into medical school.

Turns out you don’t have to be a genius to get into medical school.

It’s ok to not have straight A’s. I certainly didn’t!

Just aim to do the best you can. There’s no secret formula for this stuff. Even when you think your best isn’t enough, at least you tried.

You didn’t get here by accident. You gotten this far bc of your hard work, tenacity and perseverance.

Even if the finish line seems impossible to achieve, keep pushing forward. It’ll be worth it.
